Melon Reaches for an Ad-Supported Tier
It's preparing a free tier that lets you listen to music in exchange for hearing ads.

In three lines.
- Melon, the music platform run by Kakao Entertainment, is preparing an "ad-supported tier" that hands you a listening pass in exchange for hearing ads, according to a June 19 exclusive from News1.
- Neither the price nor the exact shape of it has been decided yet.
- It reads as a move to compete on price, in a market where YouTube Music has pulled ahead and Spotify is coming up behind.

Hear an ad, and the music is free
An "ad-supported tier" is exactly what it sounds like. In exchange for hearing ads, you get a listening pass for free, or for very little. It's a way of lowering the threshold for someone whose finger hesitates over the payment screen — a "just give it a listen first." The structure itself isn't especially new. Opening the door for free, then letting the listening habit quietly carry people over to a paid plan — the so-called "freemium" model — is something the big overseas platforms have run for a long time. The bet is that the wish to listen without ads, without interruptions, eventually leads to the payment button. As free users grow, ad revenue follows, and when some of them cross over to paying, the platform earns from both sides.
For Melon to play this card is a somewhat unfamiliar picture in Korea. Until now, the domestic music market has been set in the mold of a monthly subscription. Opening a new free on-ramp is both a channel for bringing in new users and a way of reaching a hand back out to people who have already switched to another app.
Why now
Behind it is a changed listening environment. As the line between video and music has blurred, YouTube Music has grown quickly, and Spotify has been building its presence in Korea too. Among these familiar names, the thing Melon is turning over in its hands is price — the most direct card of all. It also reads as a calculation to hold on to users who find the subscription fee a burden, or who hop between apps using only the free stretches.
Still, not much has been decided. How much it will cost, and in what form it will arrive, hasn't been made public, and details like how many ads you'd have to hear haven't emerged either. It's closer to a preview than a settled fact. Even so, this competition over the top spot in Korea means, for the listener, one more option on the table. Which app to open, whether to sit through the ads or pay. That choice tips a little more toward the listener's side.

That's the last of the numbers. Now, the music. Whatever plan you listen on, what's left when the day ends is the one song that caught in your heart that day. A song you brushed past by chance, for free, can become a taste you'll treasure for a long time, and a melody leaking out between the ads can turn your whole mood around. However the platforms change, I hope the temperature of that moment when we meet a song stays exactly the same.
