Nine hours is a long stretch. The sunlight at 1pm and the air at 10pm will feel like two different days. Holding out across that span is half of what this event is.

The bill

Jay Park, YENA, J.Y. Park, KAI, SUNMI and BIBI are among the names announced. The genres don't cluster on one side, so time spent taking water to the face alternates with time spent standing still and listening.

A water festival gets dull fast if every song has the same texture. Filling nine hours needs stages that raise the tension and stages that set it down for a moment, and this bill looks built with that arrangement in mind.

Some names overlap with Seoul and some can only be seen in Busan. That's why a festival under the same brand takes on a different character when the city changes. A different bill means a different rhythm to the day.

Yellow team and pink team

When you book you have to choose between the yellow team and the pink team. It's easy to assume this splits the venue; it doesn't. It's a cheering concept for the water fight, and both teams share the same viewing area.

So there's no need to worry if you and your group picked different teams. Matching up does make aiming easier, though.

The reason for a device like this is simple. You have to stand in the same space as strangers for nine hours, and dividing into sides turns that strangeness into play. One colour is all it takes to end up laughing with someone you don't know.

Before you go

Pack on the assumption that you will get soaked. A waterproof phone pouch, a change of clothes, a towel, and a plastic bag for the wet ones. For shoes, water shoes will hold up over nine hours better than sandals.

It's near the sea, so the evening turns cooler than you'd expect. If you've been wet all day and want to stand through the night stages, you'll need a thin layer. Sunscreen should be the waterproof kind, reapplied often — it washes off.

Pacing matters as much as packing. Go all out from the first stage and you'll be finished before the sun is. In a nine-hour day the genuinely good moments usually arrive after sundown. Save something for the hour when the water cools and the lights come up.

Build the trip home into the plan too. It ends at 10pm. Without a ride sorted in advance, the last thing you remember about the day won't be a stage — it'll be a bus stop.
