What kind of place Songdo is

Songdo Moonlight Festival Park is reclaimed land close to the sea. There's almost no shade, and while the wind moves through, in the daytime that wind is hot too. At night the humidity comes up instead.

There's a reason people who know this site always say the same thing: here the weather matters as much as the lineup. Late July into early August is also where the tail of the monsoon and the start of typhoon season overlap.

What goes in the bag

Pack a poncho. Not an umbrella — a poncho. At a standing show an umbrella blocks the person behind you, and once the wind picks up it's useless anyway.

Assume your feet will get wet. The ground is a mix of grass and dirt, so one rainfall leaves it soft all day. Bring spare socks and a bag for the wet ones. You can buy water on site, but the queues are long; one frozen bottle changes the afternoon.

Don't forget a power bank, especially on a three-day pass. Outdoors, hunting for signal all day drains a phone faster than usual.

How to split three days

If you bought the three-day pass, don't spend it all on day one. Fatigue at a rock festival accumulates. Jump at the front on the first night and your body stops cooperating by the second afternoon.

Writing off everything but the headliners is a waste too. The names you run into on the small daytime stages are, in fact, what brings people back. Pick one name you don't know on the timetable and mark it.

Plan meals as well. Three days of festival food only and you'll be sick of it by the third. Splitting it — on site the first day, a proper meal nearby the second — makes a real difference to stamina.

Last, the way out is where it gets most crowded. Either stay for the final song and leave slowly, or move one song early. Decide which in advance and the end of the day is less punishing.

Check the forecast at the right moment, too. A forecast three days out and a forecast on the day are often different. Pack for rain; if the weather turns out fine you simply don't use it. Packing the other way leaves you no options.

If you're booking a room, one or two subway stops out is easier to find than inside Songdo itself — more so if you're going all three days. Closer looks better, but when everything ends at once, a little distance is easier to leave from.
