Rock festival fatigue accumulates. Day three for someone who ran at the barrier on day one and for someone who watched sitting at the back are entirely different. Whatever energy you still have is the amount of stage you can see today.

If you're only coming today, the situation reverses. Your body is fine, but you don't know the two days behind you — you're stepping into an atmosphere the site has already built. Either way, moving with your own condition in mind is better.

What only the last day has

The final day has a few things the other days don't.

One is the audience's posture. There's no tomorrow, so nothing gets held back. That's why the same song draws a bigger singalong on day three than on day one.

The other is the posture on stage. A band closing the festival isn't only playing its own set; it takes on the role of ending three days. The last song sounds different from a band that's aware of that and one that isn't.

Today's practicalities

Drink more water than usual. On day three you stop registering thirst — you're already tilted toward dehydration and the signal dulls.

Feet have the hardest day today. Shoes worn for two days are already damp or crushed. If you have spare socks left, don't save them; use them now.

Don't skip a meal. On the third day the site food palls and it's easy to just pass, but then standing through the last set gets difficult.

The way out

The final day's exit is the most crowded of the three. Everyone leaves at the same time.

Hear the last song to the end and walk out slowly, or move one song early. Today I'd suggest the former. The last song after three days spent is where the year's festival memory gets set.

On the way home, hold on to one name you saw for the first time today. A festival's real yield comes from there rather than from the headliners. A band met on a small daytime stage is often the one still in your playlist months later.

This year's slogan being 'RE:BOOT' is worth a thought today too. Rebooting sounds like an odd thing to attach to a closing day, but the next year starting where three days end is also how a festival is built.

Dry your shoes as soon as you get home. Three days of damp are in them.
