A festival where you spread a mat

This is a picnic-style festival: you lay a mat on the grass and listen. A different format from standing festivals.

Sitting changes the audience's posture. Standing aligns your body toward the stage; sitting lets you talk to the person beside you and rest in between.

So the format also sets the character of the lineup. Music you can sit through suits it better than a bill built to keep everyone jumping.

Why a special zone appeared

After the general area, a reserved-seat special zone now runs in front of the stage. The organisers said it reduces waiting and improves safety and convenience.

That's where picnic festivals are weak. Without assigned places, people arrive early and wait to claim a good spot — and a format built on spreading mats loses its point once spots become a contest.

Reserved seating removes that contest. In exchange, the pleasure of choosing your own place shrinks. Running both formats side by side is this year's answer.

Imjingak as a place

The festival is held at Imjingak Peace Nuri, a site tied to the division of the peninsula.

A music festival held here comes with peace-themed programmes — making peace pinwheels, tattoo stickers — alongside busking and yoga.

When a place carries meaning, the event carries it too. From the audience's side, though, the lawn comes first. Whether this is a good place to sit down and spread a mat is the part that matters in practice.
