The night Dosan-daero becomes a stage: booking opens at 8 tonight

Sunday evening, October 4, on Dosan-daero

The Gangnam Festival, hosted by Gangnam-gu, runs October 3 to 5. This is its 15th edition. Right in the middle, on Sunday, October 4, from 6 to 9 p.m., a special stage goes up in front of Hyundai Motorstudio on Dosan-daero for the K-POP Concert.

The festival now stretches to Dosan-daero

This year the festival grounds expand from the usual Yeongdong-daero to the Dosan-daero area. A grand parade, with residents of 22 neighborhoods walking together, is the heart of the festival, and around Dosan-daero you'll find K-pop dance workshops, a global cover dance challenge, and fashion, beauty, beer and food fairs. Take a lap before the concert starts; the route makes it easy.

Closing Gangnam with 'Gangnam Style'

The last slot of a concert in Gangnam goes to the man behind 'Gangnam Style.' The music video above is that song.

Hit play and the first 4 seconds are quiet. Then, at 4 seconds, the bass floods in all at once: the share of sound below 150 Hz shoots from 15% to 87% within half a second. Hz (hertz) is how many times the air vibrates per second, and below 150 Hz is where bass and kick drum live, the rumble you feel in your body. It's the moment nearly 90% of the sound becomes a thump you feel in the soles of your feet.

At 3:41.5 the sound stops for 1.5 seconds, and at 3:45.5 the bass pours back in. If this song comes up that night, go hear for yourself how those two moments ring through open-air speakers on a city road.
