From 0 to 31 seconds before the voice comes in: the first few seconds of 10 K-pop songs on the chart now
ILLIT sings from the very first sound, and LEECHANGSUB leaves 31 seconds to the band. JENNIE holds the drums back until 38 seconds, even after the voice is in. We timed how ten songs begin.

How many seconds pass between pressing play and hearing a voice? We picked ten K-pop songs from the Bugs weekly top 100 as of October 1 and timed them. Using official videos of nearly the same length as the audio releases, we separated out the vocals, drums and bass, and measured how long each took to arrive after the very first sound. They're listed from shortest to longest, which isn't a ranking. From 0 to 31 seconds, songs open the door in very different ways.
0 seconds · ILLIT 'It's Me'
The first sound is the voice. The singing starts before any backing settles in, and the drums follow about five seconds later. At 2:18 it's also the shortest of the ten. It came out on April 30 on the EP 'MAMIHLAPINATAPAI'. Apple Music
0.3 seconds · D.O. 'Guitarist'
The singing starts almost with the first breath. The bass doesn't arrive until 9.8 seconds and the drums until 13.9, so for nearly the first ten seconds the voice stands out front on its own. It came out on September 8 on the 4th mini album 'DOPAMINE'. Apple Music
0.9 seconds · KiiiKiii 'Pop Off Pop Off'
The voice comes in under a second, and the drums and bass arrive almost together close to eight seconds in. The whole song runs 2:21. It's on the EP 'WhyKiiiKiii', out August 10. Apple Music
1.1 seconds · ROSÉ 'new trick'
The voice comes first, then the bass at 8 seconds and the drums at 15. It's an opening that builds the floor one layer at a time. A single released in September. Apple Music
4.1 seconds · Red Velvet 'Surfin' Boy'
The bass lays down first at 2 seconds, and the voice settles on top at 4.1. The drums start at 9.7. It's the first track on the summer mini album 'Velvet Summer', out August 3. Apple Music
4.9 seconds · Hwasa 'Good Goodbye'
Instruments sound first at about 1.5 seconds, then the bass at 2.5, and at 4.9 the voice and drums arrive together. The song came out in October 2025 and is still on the chart nearly a year later. Apple Music
5.9 seconds · IVE 'BANG BANG'
Measured from the official performance video. Instruments set the mood for almost six seconds before the voice comes in, and the drums and bass follow just 0.3 seconds later. Voice and floor burst out almost as one. It came out on February 9. Apple Music
7 seconds · aespa 'LEMONADE'
For seven seconds only other instruments play, with no drums or bass, before the voice comes in. The drums don't arrive until 20.7 seconds and the bass until 24.5, so the first twenty seconds feel quite light. It shares its name with the 2nd full album released May 28. Apple Music
7.4 seconds · JENNIE 'FALLEN ANGEL'
Measured from the official lyric video. The voice comes at 7.4 seconds and the bass at 14, but the drums are held back until 38.1 seconds. Of the ten, it's the song where the drums come in latest. It's the first track on the digital EP 'Fallen Angel', out August 28. Apple Music
31.5 seconds · LEECHANGSUB '사계, 그리고 너' ('Four seasons, and you')
The drums and bass are all in within three seconds, but the voice doesn't arrive until 31.5. More than half a minute is left to the band. It came out on September 15 on the EP 'Lee;Make (Fragmenta Amoris)'. Apple Music
Songs that jump straight into singing and songs that make you wait sit side by side on the same chart right now. Next time you play one of these, count what comes first in those opening seconds.
