From a red sunset to a blue one: 7 things you missed in BIGBANG's 'BiiiG' music video

BIGBANG's digital single 'BiiiG', released on August 19, the group's 20th debut anniversary, is still at No. 22 on the Bugs weekly chart for the last week of September. It's sung by three members, G-DRAGON, TAEYANG and DAESUNG, and the Bugs album notes say the lyrics carry the pride of 20 years at the top and '뱅봉' (Bangbong), the lightstick of the fandom V.I.P; the nickname joins 'bang' from BIGBANG with 'bong', the Korean word for stick. The music video was shot in a 4:3 frame, like an old TV. We picked seven things that are easy to miss on a rewatch. Times follow the official music video (3:03).

0:05 · Coffins flying through space

The first shot shows a row of lights coming closer in the dark. At 0:05 you can see that those lights are flames shooting out from behind red, orange and blue coffin-shaped boxes. The coffins fly through space like rockets. At 0:13, a member stands on the lid of a giant blue coffin set upright.

0:11 · Three names

The rap at 0:11 opens by calling the three members in turn: 'B.B G, Tae, 대성이' (the last word is DAESUNG's name, said fondly). At 0:20 a member stands with back to the camera in a red jacket, and on the back, under three bars studded with glitter, '지용' (Jiyong), '태양' (Taeyang) and '대성' (Daesung) are embroidered in colored thread.

0:37 · A '20' instead of twenty candles

The moment '20 years, man 스무고개 Twerk' comes in at 0:37 (스무고개 is the Korean name for the guessing game twenty questions), a giant cake stands on screen, topped with a crown and a '20'-shaped candle. A member leans against the cake and stretches one hand toward the top. August 19, the day the song came out, was the group's 20th debut anniversary.

0:59 · 'Salvador Dalí'

When 'Big Shots 살바도르 달리' (Salvador Dalí) comes at 0:59, the screen shows the floor from above. People dressed in white lie scattered in a circle, with a member in the middle. The album notes say the song pays homage to artists like Dalí and athletes like Muhammad Ali.

1:10 · A red sunset

When '마침 오늘 붉은 노을' ("and today, a red sunset") comes at 1:10, the back of the screen fills with an orange sunset, and people raise their hands as black silhouettes. '붉은 노을' is also the title of the Lee Moon-sae song that BIGBANG sang again in 2008, released in English as 'Sunset Glow'. The album notes, too, say this lyric calls 'Sunset Glow' to mind. At 1:20, a 'BiiiG' neon sign glows above a ring with a picture of the Earth spread across its floor.

2:04 · Ali, and a blue sunset

The second verse swaps the words in the same spots. At 2:04, 'Big Shots 무하마드 알리' (Muhammad Ali) takes the place of '살바도르 달리', and the screen shows a ring surrounded by people in yellow boxing gloves. At 2:15, the line that held the red sunset becomes '나침반은 푸른 노을' ("my compass is a blue sunset"), and the screen, too, shows a member washed in blue.

2:54 · Three rings

At the end, in the dark after the song stops, a glowing pillar shape rises. At 2:57 three round rings settle on top of it, and flames light up inside two of them. At 3:00 this shape becomes the center of the 'BiiiG' logo, and the video ends. Apple Music
