'JUMP' holds its breath for 2.65 seconds: 10 chart songs and the spots where the sound cuts out

There are moments in the middle of a song when the sound suddenly cuts out. Of the 100 songs on the Bugs weekly chart for the last week of September (September 28–October 4), we measured the 84 whose downloaded audio or official video matched the official running time. Sixteen of them had a spot where the sound fell more than 20 dB below the two seconds just before it and stayed there for at least 0.25 seconds. Decibels (dB) measure loudness, and a drop of 20 dB sounds to the ear as if the volume fell to about a quarter. Only four songs hold that gap for more than a second: 'JUMP', 'Suddenly', 'Magnetic' and 'BAD'. 'BAD' was left out because the sound of its official video differs from the audio track, which left us with ten songs. We also split the sound into four layers (vocals, drums, bass and the rest of the backing) to see what comes back first. Lengths follow the audio tracks, and times follow the video attached to each song.

At a glance

Song Time Length of the gap What comes back first
'JUMP' 2:18 2.65 sec Backing without drums or bass
'Suddenly' 1:15 1.5 sec Vocals and bass
'Magnetic' 2:05 (audio) 1.45 sec The voice alone
'Drowning' 0:16 0.65 sec The intro backing
'plot twist' 2:35 0.65 sec 'Na na na'
'I'm gonna TOESA' 1:06 0.3 sec All four
'Surfin' Boy' 0:56 0.3 sec 'Ha ha' without drums or bass
'Deja Vu' 0:23 0.3 sec Vocals and bass
'ONE MORE TIME' 2:48 0.3 sec All four
'Blue Valentine' 1:48 0.25 sec The chorus and backing

Songs that stop for more than a second

2:18 · BLACKPINK 'JUMP' (뛰어)

The longest stop of the ten. After 'Wanna see you bumpin' baby, bouncin' to the bass' ends at 2:18.7, there's almost no sound for 2.65 seconds. What comes back is backing with neither drums nor bass. It runs on its own for about four seconds before 'BLACKPINK in your area' arrives at 2:25. It's a single released on July 11, 2025. The video is the audio track on BLACKPINK's official channel. Apple Music

1:15 · I.O.I 'Suddenly' (갑자기)

When the first chorus ends on '잊으려 누웠는데' ("I lay down to forget"), the sound nearly vanishes for 1.6 seconds from 1:15.9 in the music video; on the audio track, it's 1.5 seconds. Meanwhile, the picture cuts from a member resting chin in hand to an overhead view of a messy room. What comes back is the voice and bass, opening the second verse with '막혀 있는 도로 위' ("on a jammed road"). There are still no drums. It's the title track of the third mini album, 'I.O.I : LOOP', released on May 19, and the music video's story is in our October 12 Hidden Details. Apple Music

2:05 · ILLIT 'Magnetic'

On the audio track, after '직진해 yeah' ("go straight ahead, yeah"), the drums and bass cut out together at 2:04.9, and there's almost no sound for 1.45 seconds. At 2:06.7 the voice sings 'This time I want' alone, and the backing only returns at 2:08.5. In the music video, this spot sounds different. After the bass cuts out at 2:08.9, the rest of the sound fades over 1.8 seconds, until only a green wall is left on screen. The moment the drums and bass return at 2:10.8, a member punches through that wall. It's the title track of the debut mini album 'SUPER REAL ME' from March 2024. Apple Music

Stops shorter than a second

0:16 · WOODZ 'Drowning'

This one stops before the singing has even started. The intro backing cuts out at 0:16.2 for 0.65 seconds and then rings again, and the drums at 0:17.75, the bass at 0:18 and the voice at 0:18.75 come in one after another. It's on the April 2023 album 'OO-LI'. The video is the official audio. Apple Music

2:35 · TWS 'plot twist' (첫 만남은 계획대로 되지 않아)

Right after 'Wait wait!', 0.65 seconds go empty from 2:35.3. On screen, the members look down at the camera and reach out their palms. When the sound returns, 'Na na na' carries on without bass. It's the title track of the debut mini album 'Sparkling Blue' from January 2024. The lead photo is a scene from this song's music video. Apple Music

1:06 · SOYEON 'I'm gonna TOESA' (퇴사할게여)

After 'It was a romantic day' and a short laugh go by, all four layers stop for 0.3 seconds at 1:06.95. On screen stands a giant gold statue giving a thumbs-up. The sound comes back all at once with the single word 'Romantic', and '라라라' ("la la la") follows soon after. It's from the full album 'What a Wonderful Life', released on September 7. Other scenes from the music video are covered in our October 9 Hidden Details. Apple Music

0:56 · Red Velvet 'Surfin' Boy'

After 'Why you waiting? Surfin' boy', 0.3 seconds go empty from 0:56.4. On screen, a man on top of a wooden tower spreads both arms, and by 0:56.9, when the sound returns, has already launched into the air. The returning sound has no drums or bass, and the voice laughs 'Ha ha'. It's on 'Velvet Summer', the summer mini album Red Velvet released on August 3. Apple Music

0:23 · RESCENE 'Deja Vu'

At 0:23.5 the drums, bass and the rest of the backing all drop out at once, and for 0.3 seconds from 0:23.65 even the voice pauses for breath. At 0:24 the voice and bass come back first, and the drums enter a second later, at 0:25. It came out on July 2, 2025, on the single 'Dearest'. RESCENE's other chart songs are in our October 12 list. 2:48 · ALLDAY PROJECT 'ONE MORE TIME'

At 2:46.4 the drums, bass and the rest of the backing drop out together, and for two seconds only the voice sings 'Wait, you sure you could keep up?'. At 2:48.5 even the voice stops, and for 0.3 seconds there's no sound at all. Of the ten, this is the quietest spot. At 2:48.8 all four layers return at once. It's a single released on November 17, 2025. The video is the official audio. Apple Music

1:48 · NMIXX 'Blue Valentine'

At 1:47.8 all the backing drops out, leaving only the voice for 1.4 seconds. In between, at 1:48.35, the voice also rests for 0.25 seconds. At 1:48.8 the voice opens the chorus with 'If this love is over', and the backing returns right after. It's the title track of the first full album, released on October 13, 2025. The story of the earlier part, where the tempo speeds up, is in our NMIXX starter guide. The video is the official audio. Apple Music

How songs end is in our October 13 list, and the moment the voice first comes in is in our October 4 list.
