Two more minutes after the song ends: how much longer 40 official music videos run than the songs
Photo: still from JENNIE's 'FALLEN ANGEL' official video

Play a music video and sometimes scenes roll before the song starts, or the picture keeps going for a good while after the song ends. On October 7, we took 40 official videos for songs on the Bugs weekly chart for the last week of September (September 28 to October 4) and compared each video's length with the song length listed on Bugs. Of the 40, 22 ran more than 10 seconds longer than the song, and 9 were almost exactly as long as the song (within 2 seconds either way). We lined up each video's sound against the released track to find the second in the video where the song starts, and looked at what fills the time added before and after. Some videos were left out because the audio differs from the released track, so the start point couldn't be matched exactly.

More than a minute after the song ends

JENNIE 'FALLEN ANGEL'

Of the 40, this video runs the furthest past its song. In the 5-minute-42-second video, the song takes up 3 minutes 19 seconds. The first 22 seconds show a child through the window of a house straight out of a picture book, while English sentences appear on screen. From 3:41, when the song ends, only music plays for two minutes, with no spoken words. People holding candles and a burning house pass by, and sentences such as 'Thorns may be the sharpest, fiercest thing on this earth.' appear on screen. The EP 'Fallen Angel' came out on August 28. Apple Music

IU 'Unknown Planet'

The song starts at 0:10 and ends at 3:54. The minute or so after that is a black night sky. Each star carries the name of someone on the team, like '프로듀서 아이유' ('Producer IU'), introducing the people who made it as a constellation. Along the bottom of the screen pass sentences such as '이런 상황이면 소행성이 아니라 별일 가능성도 있다.' ('In this case, it may be a star, not an asteroid.'). It's a single released on September 10. Apple Music

TWS 'plot twist'

In the 24 seconds before the song, a member writes something in a notebook at a desk and falls asleep. In the 38 seconds after the song ends, people holding clear umbrellas, bicycles and a pink sky go by, and the last screen shows 'TWENTY FOUR SEVEN : WITH : US'. That's what the group name TWS means (TWenty four Seven with uS). Apple Music

30 seconds to a minute

CORTIS 'REDRED'

The song starts the moment the video does. From 2:43, when the song ends, the 45 seconds are end credits that open like a film's, with 'REDRED starring CORTIS'. Beside the rolling crew names, a small screen plays footage from the shoot, and at the very end the five members dance in front of a giant inflatable air dancer. The stretch of this video that fans replay most is in our October 19 list. Apple Music

Hearts2Hearts 'Lemon Tang'

In the first 15 seconds, the title 'Lemon Tang' appears over the sea, and the members blow soap bubbles on a bus. The 22 seconds after the song ends close on the members gathered under a lemon tree. Apple Music

Less than 30 seconds before and after

KiiiKiii '404 (New Era)'

Most of the added time comes before the song. For the first 25 seconds, 'new year countdown 2024', '2025' and '2026' stack up one after another in a phone's search history, and the members laugh in front of a cake topped with '2026' candles. After the song ends, there are only about 3 seconds. The song is from an EP released on January 26. Apple Music

D.O. 'Popcorn'

The 19 seconds before the song show a morning of just waking up in bed, and 'COMPANYSOOSOO presents' appears. After the song come 7 seconds. It's on the third mini album 'BLOSSOM' (April 2024). Apple Music

Videos as long as the song

SOYEON 'I'm gonna TOESA'

The video and the song both run 3 minutes 31 seconds. Even Kian84's narration is on the released track, so the story of the video is the song itself. We looked at scenes from the video in our October 9 Hidden Details. Apple Music

HANRORO 'Let Me Love My Youth'

The 4-minute-8-second video matches the song from the first sound to the last. We covered the 24-second instrumental break in the middle of the song in our October 18 list. Apple Music

DAY6 'You Were Beautiful (예뻤어)'

The video is exactly as long as the 4-minute-43-second song, released in 2017. The ending, where the backing music carries on alone for 13 seconds before fading out, is in our October 13 list. Apple Music
