A spell cast after holding its breath for four seconds: WOOAH's 'VOODOO DOLL'

Today's NONOL PICK is WOOAH's digital single 'VOODOO DOLL'. Released on September 29 at 6 PM KST, it fits the words 'Voodoo Doll' into its lyrics 23 times in under three minutes. You can see in numbers why it's hard to forget after one listen, and it's just as clear where it casts the spell hardest, which is why we picked it.

The label introduces it as a song about casting a love spell on someone who won't easily open up, until they fall for you. It borrows props like a 'voodoo doll', a 'safety pin' and a 'Plan B', and layers on wordplay such as 'Love 정권 찌르기' (a straight punch, fist thrust out) and '정곡은 아직' (haven't hit the bull's-eye yet). It's the fourth release in the 'Wish With W' series.

The place to listen is 2:02. When the bridge ends on 'From the L O V E E', the sound drops sharply for four seconds. Then at 2:08 the final 'Voodoo Doll' hits as the loudest moment of the whole song. It's the breath held right before the spell is cast. The first chorus arrives at 0:33.

The music video is mostly pixel-game screens and a sparkling voodoo doll character; a human face only passes by briefly around 1:44, as a silhouette laid over a space scene. You can see all five members in the separate fan chant video. NANA introduces the song as one "carrying the feeling of boldly confessing to you", and WOOYEON tells fandom WOW, "So we can all have even more fun, it'd be great if you followed the fan chant too." After 'Don't worry, it's love' you shout '(love!)', after 'poke you where it counts' you shout '(wow~!)', and so on.

WOOAH perform the song today (October 3) at their 1 PM and 6 PM KST fan concert 'WXW : WICKED'. If you're going, try holding your breath with them for those four seconds at 2:02.
