The Weight of the Year's First Song
On why, at the start of a new year, we place our hearts on a single song.

Between the night of December 31st and the small hours of January 1st, nothing actually happens. The second hand just ticks over one more notch. And yet, every year, on that night, I do something a little silly. As if the me of yesterday and the me of today were two different people, I make some kind of promise to myself. Even knowing that the only thing that has changed is a single number on the calendar, I keep catching my breath in front of that one day.

Why We Place Our Hearts on a First Song
Maybe the reason we go out of our way to load meaning onto the first day of the year is that we need at least one good excuse to begin again. Let last year's regrets end here; from here, let's walk a little differently. We draw a line across a day that hasn't really changed at all, and we treat that line like a promise to ourselves.
Choosing the year's first song comes from the same place. It sounds grand, but really it's just tucking a small wish — 'this is how I want to live this year' — quietly into a single song. Some people want a spirited track to fill them with energy; others want to sit beside a quiet one and let their heart settle. It doesn't have to be dazzling, and it doesn't have to be a song everyone knows. The fact that there's no right answer is, to me, the kindest part of this whole choice. Year-end tallies and ranking charts can be set aside for a moment; it's one of those rare occasions when your own ears and heart are the only measures that matter. Just follow, slowly, the sound you want to be near right now.
The Promise Fades, but the Song Stays
A resolution blurs within a few days. And yet, strangely, the song you listened to alongside it holds on far longer. The season and the air of the days you played it on repeat, the view outside the window, the feelings you were carrying back then — all of it settles quietly into the melody. What stays in a song isn't only the melody. The whole stretch of time you spent listening to it comes attached. So when that song drifts back much later, even the feelings that had gone hazy come along with it.

Picture some worn-out, unsteady day a few months from now. If that song happens to slip out somewhere — a café, the radio — the feeling you held at the start of the year will quietly come back to life. A resolution you thought had vanished, but had only briefly forgotten, returns riding a familiar melody. You don't really feel the weight of a first song in the moment you choose it. It reveals itself, quietly, only long after. So maybe the real reason we choose a first song is to mail a single track ahead of time to our future, tired selves.
Tonight, Your One Song
What was your first song this year? It's okay if you haven't picked one yet. There's no such thing as a first song that's too late. Tonight, turn the lights down a little, and without hurrying, play just one song. It doesn't matter if it isn't trending, or if it isn't a song other people call good. If it's the one song that reaches closest to your heart right now, that's enough.
That song will keep quiet company beside you all year long — lending a wordless shoulder on the heavy days, humming along right next to you on the good ones.
