The front of a list is usually a seat that goes to a big name. This year a song by a group that debuted last year is sitting in it. Given that a list like this looks at the song itself rather than sales or streaming counts, that result says something fairly clear.

How to flip a title called '404'

'404 (New Era)' is the title track of KiiiKiii's second mini album 'Delulu Pack', out in January. Members' vocals and rap sit on a beat built on UK house and garage.

Billboard put it this way.

'404' is the most common error code on the internet, but KiiiKiii turned it completely around, filling it with a new meaning: not found in the system.

Reading a not-found marker not as absence but as 'not yet categorised'. Once you manage to flip a single title, the whole song starts sounding at that flipped angle.

UK house and garage were rhythms made for the small hours of a club. That a group in its second year reached for them says something about this song too. Instead of familiar K-pop grammar, the materials came from somewhere further out.

Put Hearts2Hearts' 'RUDE!' at two and AKMU's 'Paradise of Rumors' at three side by side and you can see the range of this list. A group that debuted recently and a duo that has been working for years split the top of it between them.

Which is another way of saying that years in the business didn't decide the outcome this year. That's why K-pop in 2026 is hard to summarise in one line. There was more than one direction.

How to read a list

A list like this isn't an answer key. It's one viewpoint, with the taste and criteria of the people who picked twenty-five songs baked in. There's no need to memorise the order.

What's good about a list, though, is that it pulls back out a song you missed. A track released in January getting talked about again in July doesn't usually happen without one.

We live in a time when music comes out faster than anyone can listen to it. So having someone tidy up six months later and say "this one would be a shame to miss" is more useful than it used to be.
