This summer's WATERBOMB ends in Sokcho after Seoul and Busan. A single-day date.

Between Seorak and the East Sea

The site sits between mountains and sea. Nine hours of water on a resort's outdoor grounds.

At an outdoor festival the site isn't a backdrop, it's a condition. A city park is easy to reach and brings noise complaints; a resort is the reverse. Getting there is a nuisance, and in exchange there's more room for sound and water.

Lodging attached is another difference. Seoul dates end and you go home; in Sokcho most people stay the night. A one-day show turns into a two-day trip.

What ten thousand means

Sokcho city held an inter-agency meeting on the 10th. It reviewed the show's safety plan, traffic and parking measures, crowd management and emergency medical support.

When ten thousand people enter a city of eighty thousand in one day, it stops being a concert question and becomes a city-operations one. That's why parking and emergency medicine are agenda items.

A local government holding this kind of meeting also means the festival has moved from a private event to a regional one. The city said it expects spending to flow into lodging, food and tourism. A water party has become a line in the local economy.

Before you go

It's a show that uses water, so you need a change of clothes and a waterproof bag. That much is the same as Seoul and Busan.

What differs is travel. Sokcho is hard to do in a day. Book the room first and the show second. Late-August weekends in Sokcho are crowded to begin with.

It starts at 1 p.m., so you take a long stretch of sun. Nine hours wet — watch your body temperature and your water intake together.

When it ends at 10 p.m., the trip starts. The sea is right there.
