From a train to being honest — GIL CHANHO's full session

The order of four

Line the titles up in order and it looks like this.

The first is '기차' — a train. An object, and a vehicle that only goes where the track goes.

The second is '사람들은' (people…) and the third is '재미있던 일들이' (the things that were fun…). Both have a subject and no predicate. They end without saying what people are like, or what became of the things that were fun.

Titles that are only subjects

The middle two are the front halves of sentences, set down on their own.

Say 'people…' and something has to follow. People change, people don't know. Leave that place empty and the listener fills it themselves.

'재미있던 일들이' works the same way. Only the tense is fixed. That they were fun means they aren't now, so the title alone has already moved one tense past.

Why the last one is a manner

The fourth song is '솔직하게' — honestly. An adverb.

If the first three were an object and unfinished sentences, the last points at a method. Not what will be done but how.

The arrangement is interesting: '솔직하게' placed after titles that don't finish what they're saying. It's an order that leaves places blank and then says, at the end, that it will be honest. What it will be honest about is still blank.

Today, like this

It would be nice to hear this on a train, but you don't have to be. Just remember the first title is a vehicle.

On the middle two, fill in what follows the title yourself. There's no right answer — what you fill in tells you your own state that day.

Turn the last song up a little. A song titled 'honestly' needs volume to balance the three before it.
