The direction turns

The first title ends in 위하여 — "for," the word Korean uses for a dedication. It names who the song is for: children who are having a hard time. People other than the singer are already inside the title.

The second, 'Stay', is an imperative. There's still someone on the other end, but this time the song is the one asking. If the first was a song that gave something away, the second is a song that holds on.

With the third, 'Joajyeonnabwa' (좋아졌나봐), the direction flips. The subject comes back to the self. And -나봐 is the ending you reach for when you can't quite be sure of your own heart — closer to "I think I've come to like it" than "I like it." Words that were being handed to other people turn into words that look inward.

The last one, 'Bulkkocheul Taewo' (불꽃을 태워), burn the flame, is an imperative again, but this time it has no target. The title alone won't tell you who is being told, and that is exactly why it reads as something said to oneself.

Someone who started with a cover

MIGYO first became known through a cover of Yoon Jong Shin's 'Jonni (좋니)', done in the form of an answer song. A start built on replying to somebody else's work.

An answer song only exists if the original does. It's a way of beginning with your own place set right next to someone else's. So when a singer who started there arranges four songs under their own name, closing on an imperative with no target is worth noticing.

MIGYO is known for ballads but has tried a range of genres, and keeps in touch with listeners abroad through content in other languages, Japanese among them.

How to listen today

Play the four in order. The third song is where the direction folds once, from outside to inside. Listen for how the weight of the voice changes right there.

Then try just the first and the last, back to back. Put 위하여 and 태워 side by side and you can see what the two songs in between were doing.
