Why announce a lineup in two rounds

Fifteen acts came in July; 24 more were added to confirm 39.

Announce everything at once and the news happens once. Split it and it happens twice — the first round builds interest, the second converts that interest into a decision.

It's useful from the audience's side too. When the first lineup isn't enough to decide on, you can wait for the second and judge then.

Thirty-nine acts across three days works out to roughly thirteen a day.

That number also means no one can see everything. Multiple stages mean overlapping times, and overlaps force choices.

Which is why lineup announcements matter at large festivals. You aren't deciding what to see so much as deciding in advance what to give up.

Choosing France as focus country

This year marks 140 years of Korea–France relations, and Jarasum has set France as its focus country.

A focus country means concentrating on one nation's music. Jazz began in the United States but grew differently in each country, and French jazz has a particularly distinct lineage.

Jarasum describes itself as an international jazz platform that has introduced the world's jazz to Korea and connected Korean musicians abroad since 2011. The focus country is the concrete form of that role.

Before you go

The festival runs October 9–11. There's more than a month to go.

Jarasum is outdoors. Early October in Gapyeong swings widely between day and night, so however warm the afternoon, an evening layer is essential.

Shoes matter at an outdoor festival too. You'll be walking on grass and dirt paths, so low and comfortable is the way.
