Choosing to leave the orchestra out

The label, Music Farm Entertainment, said this is the first show since his debut staged without an orchestra. In place of the large ensemble, the weight goes to the vocals and to Yulband, the house band he has played with for years.

Reduce the ensemble and the layers of sound thin out. In exchange each instrument's job becomes distinct, and the space where the voice sits widens.

The label also said songs rarely played in large-ensemble shows will make this setlist. Change the ensemble and the list of songs you can play changes with it.

The same name, the same hall, seven years on

Kim Dong-ryul held a headline concert with the same title, 'An Old Song', at this same Grand Theater in 2019. This year's show returns to that place under that name seven years later.

Reusing both title and venue is uncommon. Usually each run gets a new name.

Reuse the name and the two shows connect. Rather than two separate concerts it becomes the second instance of one. Whatever changed in seven years sits outside the name.

The song title is the concert title

'An Old Song' is a track from the 2008 full-length album 'Monologue'. It runs 5:15.

An eighteen-year-old song's title becomes the name of the concert. And that title is itself about being old.

Eighteen years since the song, seven since the concert of the same name. Time has stacked twice inside the title.

Tickets open tomorrow, September 4 at 5pm. Only two sellers — the Sejong Center site and NOL — and the official notice states tickets are not sold through any other route.

Each seller handles different seating blocks. Sejong Center said it would post the booking-page guidance at 5pm today.

All seats are reserved, two per person, ages seven and up. Start times split between 5pm and 7:30pm depending on the date, so check before booking.
