FOG (Festival Offener Genres) 2026 runs 17–20 September in Basel, Switzerland. This is the fourth edition. The venues are Kaserne Basel, Tanzhaus Basel, CONTAINER and Museum Tinguely.

Gazaebal's live audiovisual work 'UN/Readable Sound' is on Friday 18 September at 8:30 p.m., in Silo 2 at Tanzhaus. That's local time — 3:30 a.m. Saturday 19 September in Korea.

This Isn't a First Meeting

It's easy to read this as "Korean music went to Europe," but the traffic has been going both ways for years.

FOG's co-director Roberto Maqueda has already been to Seoul. The co-director played '(ex)tension' at WeSA Festival 2025, and the 38-minute video is on WeSA's official channel. Annabelle Playe came to WeSA in 2018 and 2025, and plays at FOG on the 19th. Gazaebal, too, already played WeSA back in 2017.

Gazaebal put it this way: "This invitation matters in that it connects the work of Korean sound and audiovisual artists directly to the European scene." And: "I hope it becomes an overseas distribution route that leads to further invitations and co-production, rather than stopping at a one-off introduction."

Korean work travels with Gazaebal. Of the eleven pieces in the sound-art installation at Tanzhaus on 18–19 September, open 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., three are by Korean artists. Admission is free.

I Measured All 46 Minutes 47 Seconds

The video embedded above is a record of exactly the work Gazaebal is playing in Basel — a Seoul performance filmed last November. I pulled the whole thing.

First, the opening. There are 3.2 seconds of complete digital silence at the front. Actual zero. It passes −60dB at 2.00 seconds, and at the 3.0-second mark the low-end share jumps from 14.7% to 99.1% while the level leaps 61.7dB. Not a fade-in — a collision. The first sound is a block of low end.

And this piece is made almost entirely of low end. 20–150Hz takes a median 64.1% of the total energy; the median for 6,000–11,000Hz is 0.003%. Across 98.5% of the running time the highs are under 1% of the whole.

It isn't codec-limited. A codec cuts at 16–20kHz. This is how it was composed.

The Highs Come Once, for 3.25 Seconds

From 11:46.75 to 11:49.75.

The 6–11kHz share climbs from 0.9% to a peak of 80.5%. Across the entire 46 minutes 47, the number of quarter-second windows where the high share exceeds 20% is exactly thirteen — and all thirteen sit here, consecutively.

The important thing is that it doesn't get louder. The level over that stretch actually falls from −18.1dB to −19.8dB. The volume stays put while the spectrum flips wholesale upward.

You listen to the floor for 46 minutes and then to the ceiling for 3.25 seconds. That's why the piece works — it uses the device once, so those three seconds are all you remember.

There's a stretch where the floor drops out too. From 9:00 to 11:30 the low-end share collapses from 71.9% to 3.5% while mids fill the space. The level barely moves, −17.9dB to −18.4dB. It doesn't get quieter; only the ground under it disappears.

The Ending Returns Seven Times

From 45:58 the sound falls to −58.2dB, then at 46:09 it returns to −18.0dB. That's 40.2dB in one second.

It repeats seven times, weaker each time: −18.0 → −22.2 → −23.7 → −25.7 → −38.8 → −43.6 → −46.5dB. Between them it drops to −50 to −64dB. The last sound is at 46:44, and from 46:46.2 it's true silence.

There is no beat. I measured the tempo across six sections and got 187.5, 194, 110 and 55BPM — all over the place. It isn't music with a pulse.

How to Listen

Headphones, and quieter than usual. With 64% of the energy in the low end, playing it loud on speakers just makes the room resonate and the structure disappears. Turn it down and you can actually feel the floor drop out between 9:00 and 11:30.

If you don't have 46 minutes 47, take twenty seconds from 11:40 to 12:00. Those 3.25 seconds are in there.
