One guitar, one voice, a different floor for every song
Four songs singer-songwriter Yu Eun Chan sang at a winter playground: Beolmal Children's Park.

A new song has arrived at the playground today. It's Yu Eun Chan.

Yu Eun Chan's self-description: "a singer-songwriter who sings about life." This time the playground is Beolmal Children's Park. Sitting on a rock in front of a big tree-like structure, in a thick padded coat and a scarf, Yu Eun Chan sang four songs with just one acoustic guitar. According to the video description, it was bitterly cold on the day of the shoot. The singer is wearing clear in-ear monitors, too.
Four songs
- 0:50 'Naeil (내일)'
- 5:05 'Heukbaekdosi (흑백도시)'
- 9:47 'Kkaman Bam (까만 밤)'
- 14:01 'Dasi Annyeong (다시 안녕)'
The description attaches a line or two of lyrics to each song, and I love this one from 'Heukbaekdosi': "I won't try so hard to paint too many colors into this city."
And one more thing caught my eye. 'Naeil' comes with the line "leaning on a small hope that a slightly better tomorrow will come, I fall asleep," and 'Kkaman Bam' with "let me lean on you just a little before I go." Leaning to fall asleep, leaning before leaving. Two of the four songs have leaning in them. When talking between songs, Yu Eun Chan folds both hands on top of the guitar and looks straight ahead. Off to the back left stands the 'NONOL LIVE' sign.
Same guitar, a different floor in each song
It's just one guitar and a voice, but the amount of low end changes quite a bit from song to song. I measured, song by song, how much of the sound sits below 150 Hz. Hz (hertz) is how many times the air vibrates per second, and below 150 Hz is where low sounds you feel in your body live, like the ring of a guitar's thick strings.
- 'Naeil' 5.9%
- 'Heukbaekdosi' 8.6%
- 'Kkaman Bam' 6.3%
- 'Dasi Annyeong' 11.5%
The last song, 'Dasi Annyeong,' has twice as much as the first. The high range, on the other hand, where the sparkle of guitar strings, breaths and 's' sounds live, is lowest in 'Dasi Annyeong' of all four. The set closes with the lowest, darkest song.
'Heukbaekdosi' is the one sung loudest of the four. Around 5:05, as the song begins, the low-end share jumps from 5.8% to 32.6%. You can hear right away that the guitar carries a different weight from the song before.
In a warm room, one or two notches louder
Overall it's not a loud set. Turn the volume up a notch or two from usual and listen on earphones in a quiet room with no wind noise. If you're short on time, start at 14:01 with 'Dasi Annyeong.' It's about three minutes and forty seconds that end on the lowest, darkest sound.
