The quietest song holds the loudest sound
Four songs the band irda played at Seonyudo Park. Vocalist Park Chae-rin's voice sits right in the middle.

A new song has arrived at the playground today. It's irda.

irda is a band built around vocalist Park Chae-rin, who took part in Mint Paper's compilation 'Bright #10.' This time the playground is Seonyudo Park. Park Chae-rin, in a beret, stands behind a music stand, with an acoustic guitar and keys on either side. The background is full of green leaves. This is NONOL LIVE VOL 45, posted in December 2023.
Four songs
- 1:16 '7942'
- 6:32 'Geujeo Geureon Ibyeol (그저 그런 이별)'
- 11:48 'Bada (바다)'
- 16:04 '8worui Kkeut (8월의 끝)'
I was curious about the number title '7942,' but the description doesn't explain it. Instead it carries the line "our hearts are sometimes easily light, sometimes endlessly heavy." And 'Geujeo Geureon Ibyeol' comes with the line "in love, there is no such thing as a sudden goodbye."
Every song starts with the floor
When I measured the spots where the songs change, a pattern showed up. Every time a song begins, the low end rushes in first.
The share of sound below 150 Hz jumps from 6% to 46% at 6:34, when 'Geujeo Geureon Ibyeol' starts; from 11% to 58% at 11:48, when 'Bada' starts; and from 13% to 52% at 16:04, when '8worui Kkeut' starts. Hz (hertz) is how many times the air vibrates per second, and below 150 Hz is where the low rumble you feel in your body lives. When the pause between songs ends, the floor goes down first and then the singing comes in.
The quietest song, the loudest sound
On average, the song sung most quietly of the four is 'Bada.' Yet the loudest sound of the entire set is also inside 'Bada,' at 15:21.
So 'Bada' has the widest range of loudness. Its quiet side and loud side sit more than 22 dB apart, while the other three songs range 12 to 17 dB. dB (decibels) is the unit of loudness, and a 10 dB difference sounds roughly twice as loud. It's a song that surges in and pulls back like waves. 'Geujeo Geureon Ibyeol,' on the other hand, has the narrowest range and the most high end, so it sounds the most even and the brightest of the four.
With the window open
It's a video full of green, so it goes well with the window open. If you're short on time, start with 'Bada' at 11:48. At 15:21 comes the loudest sound of the set.
