ORORA's 'Orchid' and the sound kept closed for 28 seconds
ORORA, who went from BBC journalist to singer-songwriter, released an extended edition that grows the singer's first solo EP to ten songs. I spent a long time with the newly released 'Orchid.'

When you close the bathroom door and turn on the shower, the music playing in the living room turns to mush behind the wall, and the moment you open the door every sound turns sharp at once. ORORA's 'Orchid' begins at exactly that moment of opening the door.

The eldest sister, the journalist, the singer-songwriter
ORORA, whose real name is Oh In-young, released an album in 2004 as the leader and eldest member of the children's girl group Coloring Baby 7 Princesses (컬러링 베이비 7공주), and grew up to work as a journalist at the BBC in Britain. As a solo artist, the singer started with the single 'Vulnerable Night' in February 2025, released the six-song EP 'On My Way' this March, and at 6 p.m. on September 19 released 'On My Way (Extended),' which grows that EP to ten songs.
The newly released songs are 'Orchid,' 'You Could Be the Love of My Life' and 'On My Way,' three in all; 'Apocalypse,' also on the extended edition, came out first as a single on August 30. ORORA writes the songs personally and takes part in producing them, with a solo show coming up on October 22.
A sound kept closed for 28 seconds
Play the visualizer video for 'Orchid,' and for the first 28 seconds the sound is muffled, as if coming through a wall. The sparkling high end, cymbal hiss, breath, 's' sounds, stays around 1% of the whole, and then at 28 seconds, like a door opening, it jumps to 13% all at once and every sound turns sharp.
A song that never raises its voice
Even at its loudest, this song is quiet. The loudest sound comes at 3:00, and it's about as loud as an ordinary moment in ONEUS's 'Say Yes!,' which we covered this morning. Instead, at 2:25, the low end jumps in all at once from 1% to 51% and holds the floor firm; low end here means below 150 Hz, the rumble you feel in your body like a bass, and Hz (hertz) is how many times the air vibrates per second. Then from 3:21 that floor drops away again, and only the light sounds remain to close the song.
As you open the door
So tonight, when you finish your shower and are about to open the bathroom door, listen to just the first 30 seconds. At 28 seconds the muffled sound behind the wall turns sharp all at once, and there, waiting on the other side of the door, is 'Orchid'.
