A 1979 bass line runs through half of 'Drop That!' — seven things you may have missed in CLOSE YOUR EYES' new song

The bass phrase from Yoon Si-nae's '이 밤을 즐겁게' ('Enjoy This Night'), five semitones lower and 1.22 times faster. It carries 1 minute 50 seconds of the song's 3 minutes 20 seconds, and the words '이 밤' ('this night') only turn up where that phrase drops out. Right down to the issue number '256' on a newspaper in the music video.

The credits for 'Drop That!' include a line that reads "Contains samples from 이 밤을 즐겁게 by 윤시내". It means the song samples a track Yoon Si-nae released in 1979, '이 밤을 즐겁게' ('Enjoy This Night'). But which part of the original it borrows isn't spelled out in the album introduction or in any of the showcase coverage. So we split both songs into their separate instruments and held them up against each other ourselves. Add what we found in the music video, the lyrics and the credits, and that makes seven. All times refer to the music video.

Three things we found in the sound

1. 0:12, a bass line from 1979 comes in

From 0:12, where 'Ya Ya Ya Uh' kicks in, the bass keeps repeating one short phrase. It clings to a single note, then climbs two steps at the very end. In '이 밤을 즐겁게', this phrase loops without a break from 0:02, when the song begins, to 0:48, when the first sung section ends. We used a stem-separation program to lift out just the bass from both songs, matched their tempo and pitch, and laid one over the other. Cut 'Drop That!' from 0:15 to 1:20 into five-second slices and compare, and in every slice 96–100% of it lines up with the original to within less than a semitone (the distance between two neighboring keys on a piano). You can hear the original right here.

2. Five semitones lower, 1.22 times faster

In the original, it takes 6.1 seconds for this phrase to go around once. In 'Drop That!' it takes 5.0 seconds. That makes it roughly 1.22 times faster, and at this song's tempo (about 96 beats per minute) it comes to exactly two bars. The pitch has come down by a little over five semitones. There's one more thing. The original's official audio on YouTube sits nearly half a semitone off today's standard pitch, but the phrase in 'Drop That!' is tuned right to standard pitch. Whether they cut the original recording as is or played the same phrase anew is something a pitch comparison alone can't settle. The album introduction describes the song's foundation as 'a string line and an upright bass sound'.

3. Laid out the opposite way from the original

In the original, once the vocal moves on to the next section around 0:50, the bass leaves this phrase behind too. 'Drop That!' does the opposite. It keeps the phrase running under the chorus (0:42, 1:42), the part that opens with 'Drop that, 네가 누구든' ('Drop that, whoever you are'), and instead pulls it out of the second verse (1:22–1:42) and the bridge (2:02–2:42). It comes back at 2:42 with the last 'Ya Ya Ya Uh' and carries on until 3:02, which means the original's bass phrase holds up about 1 minute 50 seconds of the song's 3 minutes 20 seconds.

Three things we found in the lyrics and on screen

4. '이 밤' ('this night') only where the bass is gone

The words '이 밤' from the original's title come up three times across the lyrics: at 1:22, '얘길 해보자 이 밤에' ('let's talk, this night'); at 1:39, '웃어 이 밤 다 가도록' ('laugh until this night is all gone'); and at 2:19, '웃어 이 밤이 가도록' ('laugh until this night goes by'). All three sit in the second verse and the bridge, the sections where the original's bass phrase has been taken out. The same second verse also has the line "Like Marvin Gaye, let's get it on" at 1:37. It pulls American soul singer Marvin Gaye's 1973 song 'Let's Get It On' into the lyrics.

5. 0:22, the frame widens and sparks fly from a shoe

The music video opens like an old movie. The first screen carries the subtitle 'A JAZZ VIDEO', the line "A YOUNG HEART DANCES TO ITS OWN RHYTHM" and the release date '2026.09.30'. For the first 22 seconds, a boy roams the streets inside a narrow frame blacked out on both sides. At 0:22, as the first line of the first verse, 'Black jeans, cap, empty street', comes in, the frame opens out to both sides, and right away sparks fly from under a member's dress shoe. The lyric that arrives about six seconds later is 'Tight shoes, feet burning up'.

6. 2:41, the '256' hidden in a newspaper

Pause on the newspaper, 'JAZZ HERALD', that flashes past at 2:41. The date reads 'WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 30 2026', the day the album came out. The issue number in the top right corner is 'VOL. 01 ISSUE. 256', the same number as in the album title '256th Note'. A 256th note is one whole note split into 256 pieces, and the album introduction calls it 'one of the shortest notes in existence'. The front-page headline is 'RHYTHM OF THE STREETS: A BOY'S JOURNEY', and the story in the next column opens with a child who gazes at a tuxedo and dreams of one day standing on a stage of their own. At 2:42, right after the newspaper disappears, the original's bass phrase comes back in.

The credits, and what the members said

7. Music by eight writers, lyrics by two members

According to the album credits, 'Drop That!' was made and arranged by producer Agwi, and eight people are listed as composers: Agwi, Loa, Nathan Jang, Adinah Imani Bolden, Adrian Tangen Myhre, Jacques Philippe, Pascal "Kalli" Reinhardt and 김가연 (Kim Ga-yeon). Members Jeon Min-wook and Song Seung-ho worked on the Korean lyrics. At the showcase, Song Seung-ho admitted, "Jazz funk was a genre we hadn't really come across before. This was our first time with it, so it felt awkward, and because we were sampling a song by such a respected veteran, we felt some pressure, too." The members also said that, "thankfully," Yoon Si-nae "gladly" gave them permission to sample the song.

A performance of the song is scheduled for M Countdown today (October 1) at 6 p.m. KST. On stage, too, wait for the 0:12 moment when the bass climbs its two steps.
