On things that rust without being iron — Juho's 'Rusted Heart'

Breaking and rusting are not the same thing.

Breaking happens in a moment, and you can point to the moment. You can say when it cracked. Rust doesn't work that way. Nobody can name what happened between yesterday and today, and yet after a few months it is plainly different.

Rust isn't disappearance, it's change

Rusted iron hasn't gone anywhere. The iron met oxygen and became a different substance. By weight it has actually gained.

That fact changes the title. 'Rusted Heart' isn't saying a heart wore away to nothing; it's saying a heart turned into something else. Still in place, different in kind.

Which is why there's no undoing rust. You can scrub it off, but that's stripping the surface, and whatever you strip comes out of the thickness. You don't get back to the original — you get thinner.

A title that needs time to work

The word 'rusted' has a duration folded into it. Nothing rusts in a day.

So the title presumes an old feeling. It can't be attached to a heart that broke this morning. You use it for something left as it was for a few years.

Breakup songs mark time in various ways: use a number and it gets precise, use a state and it goes soft at the edges. 'Rusted' is the second kind. It never says how long — only that it's been long enough for rust.

Tonight, try it like this

Play the song first. The title points at an old state, so check whether the voice is hurried or unhurried. Hurried means it's still going; unhurried means it's already past.

Then look at the English title. 'Rusted' is a past participle — not in the middle of rusting, but already rusted. The Korean does the same, and both titles look at the same moment.

Last, think about why hearts get likened to iron so often. Iron seems solid enough to last, and yet air alone will change it. The more something was guarded, the more that goes.

What breaks can be mended; what rusts cannot. That state can be called this. 'Rusted Heart'.
