A mini album seven years on
Jung Dong-ha's last mini album was 2019's 'Sketch'. 'Oasis' comes seven years after it.
Seven years is not time spent away but time not bound into an album. The stages were there. What took long was gathering it into one record.
The title track 'Oasis' is a rock ballad with a calm melody and band sound, about catching your breath in a weary daily life and moving forward again. An oasis is where you meet water in a desert, so the title points straight at the content.
Three voices, released today
On September 9 a live clip of 'Oasis' sung by Jung Dong-ha, Kim Jong-seo and Kim Kyung-ho was released.
All three are names that stand for Korean rock vocals. Kim Kyung-ho's own catalog also includes a song called 'Oasis'. Someone who owns a song by that title is singing another person's 'Oasis'.
Rock vocals have strong individual character. So three together produce contrast rather than overlap. Who took which passage is audible on its own.
What splitting means
A song sung by one person has one speaker. Split between three, there are three.
In a song about a weary daily life, those three become three differently weary people. The difference in singing the same words in different voices becomes the song's width.
The clip came three days after release. First the song sung alone, then a few days later the version sung by three.
