From one to many, and back to one: seven things you missed in MINZY's 'Calling' music video

MINZY's 'Calling' is a song whose voice narrows and widens from left to right. We measured that width in the NONOL PICK on October 2, and rewatching the music video, the number of people on screen follows it exactly. When the voice gathers in the center, MINZY is alone; when the choir spreads to the edges of both ears, dancers fill the screen. Timecodes follow the official music video.

0:10 · An opening for three

In a bright space with big windows, like a rehearsal studio, two dancers stand close on either side of MINZY, in white with pearl details. The video begins with three.

0:14 · When the voice gathers into one line

At 0:14, where the first verse starts, the voice is a single line ringing in the middle of your head. On screen, too, MINZY stands alone by the window.

0:52 · A line in beige suits

After harmonies join at 0:42 and the sound widens a little, dancers in beige suits stretch out in a long line on both sides of MINZY at 0:52.

1:40 · The change of clothes

Around 1:40, MINZY switches to a white jacket with sharp shoulders and the dancers to light-blue denim. The floor changes from bluish to pinkish too.

1:58 · When the choir spreads, the screen fills

At 1:58, when the voice spreads widest to the edges of both ears, the screen fills with dancers in denim. At 2:04, MINZY in the white jacket stands in the middle of the crowd. It's as if the layered voices of the choir were turned into many bodies.

2:22 · Alone again, in a dark room

At 2:22, as the voice narrows back to one line, MINZY stands alone in a dark room, with just one beam of light slanting in. Unlike the scenes around it, only this stretch has the lights off.

3:08 · Wide open, then three again

From 3:08 to the end, as the sound spreads wide once more, the dancers come flooding back. Then in the last scene at 3:30, just two remain on either side of MINZY, as at the start. The agency explained that the signature choreography, which turns 'I can hear it' into sign language, carries the idea of music felt not only through the ears but through the eyes and the heart.
