Seven seconds until the white-haired grandma smiles again: 7 things you missed in SOYEON's 'I'm gonna TOESA' video

'퇴사할게여 (Narr. 기안84)' ('I'm gonna TOESA (feat. Kian84)'), from SOYEON (i-dle)'s full album '끝내주는 인생' ('What a Wonderful Life'), released September 7, was the number one song on the Bugs weekly chart for the last week of September. As of October 4, the official music video has passed 19.5 million views. SOYEON wrote the lyrics alone and made the music with Pop Time, Daily and Likey. It's a 3:31 video about the day someone quits a job, and there are plenty of spots where a line of lyrics and a shot on screen lock together. Here are seven things you notice on a second watch. Timestamps refer to the official music video.

0:01 · Pink handwriting over a CRT office

The video opens in an office packed with bulky CRT monitors and binders. Over it, the title '퇴사 할게여' sparkles into view in pink handwriting. The first line, '퇴사할게요' ("I'm quitting"), arrives at 0:07.

0:36 · "Right out that door"

After singing '모두 안녕히 계세요' ("goodbye, everyone"), SOYEON opens a door and walks out at 0:36. At 0:38, with '그래 이팔청춘 후회하면 어때요' ("so what if I regret it, I'm young"), the screen moves out to the street. At 0:48, on '날씨 좋군요' ("what nice weather"), SOYEON, in sunglasses, spins while waving a handbag overhead, and the man in a suit alongside carries the box of belongings.

1:28 · Kian84 cuts in

Right after the line '이제 전처럼 절대로 약속 취소할 일은 없죠' ("I'll never cancel plans like before"), at 1:28, SOYEON bolts from the table, leaving behind a smiling man holding a rose. At that moment, Kian84's voice says, '너 너 이거 또 거짓말하네' ("you, you're lying again"). That one line is the "(Narr. 기안84)" in the song's title.

1:37 · A bucket list on the karaoke screen

While singing a bucket list, '전 세계 일주하기, 소설책 작가 되기, 맘 편히 노래 부르기' ("travel around the world, become a novelist, sing with a light heart"), SOYEON is holding a mic in a karaoke room. On the karaoke screen, SOYEON stands next to penguins in Antarctica at 1:39 and in front of the Statue of Liberty in New York at 1:41. At 1:43, '맘편히 노래 부르기' ("sing with a light heart") floats like a karaoke lyric over the back of a man in a suit standing on a rooftop.

2:51 · 15 seconds without singing, a dance in the street

After '언젠가 후회하는 날이 와도' ("even if a day of regret comes someday"), the drums drop out for a little over two seconds from 2:48. Then, from 2:51, for 15 seconds, only the instruments play, with no voice. Meanwhile, people pour into the street between flags and pink smoke and dance together.

3:09 · Everyone sings the last verse

The last verse, '나는 낭만적인 할머니가 되어서' ("I'll become a romantic grandma"), begins at 3:06, and at 3:09 the people from the video gather around SOYEON and sing along. A person in a red football shirt, a child with a loosened tie, a man wearing a waist bag, an office worker in a suit: they all fill one frame.

3:19 · SOYEON as a grandmother

At 3:18, in front of older women sitting under a beach umbrella, there's a white-haired grandmother in a white suit and sunglasses, while present-day SOYEON walks past behind, smiling. At 3:19 the backing stops for one second and only the voice remains, and at that moment a white-haired SOYEON stands facing the camera. Over the seven seconds of music that follow, the face grows younger little by little and returns to today's face at 3:26, smiling. The diary entry for this song in the album notes also ends with '결국 할머니밖에 더 되겠어?' ("What's the worst that can happen, I'll just end up a grandma?"). The story of this song's English title is in our Hangul Day list. Apple Music
