In 2008, KARA sang 'Pretty Girl'. A song the whole country copied off the strength of one hand-waving move. In 2026, RESCENE sang that chorus again. And it went to number one on Melon's HOT100 — a first, 835 days after their debut, with the top spot on the Bugs real-time chart too.
It's hard for a remake to get past the original, because everyone remembers the original. But RESCENE managed to lay their own colour over that memory.
Keep the original, repaint it
A good remake does two things at once: keep the original recognisable, and repaint it as something current.
RESCENE left the original's bright, self-assured teen pop mood exactly as it was. What they changed was the arrangement, ground down as fresh as grapefruit. They actually set 'grapefruit' as the key scent for this remake. Sharp and clean, exactly right for summer.
So the chorus is familiar without sounding dated. A melody from 18 years ago, mixed with the air of 2026.
How the slow burn became real
This is RESCENE's comeback after about three months, following the April digital single 'Runaway'. In between, member Won-i's YouTube took off and the word 'ascendant' started following them around. They rode that current into this comeback.
It was in the top 10 within three hours of release, and number one soon after. The moment 'ascendant' got proven on the chart.

Play it in summer, when your mood dips a little. With the window open. The freshness of that grapefruit arrangement airs the room out. For anyone who remembers KARA it lands as a small reunion; for anyone hearing it first, it's just good summer pop.
