It opens on piano, and the floor never drops out

Kim Yong Bin, winner of 'Mr. Trot 3,' released 'Only you' last night. It's a love song whose low end never goes quiet for four minutes and four seconds.

Kim Yong Bin is the singer who won TV Chosun's 'Mr. Trot 3.' Open the discography on Bugs and you'll find recordings from the TV show 'Geumta-neun Geumyoil (금타는 금요일)' piling up almost every Saturday since July. At the top of that list, a single under the singer's own name, not from a broadcast stage, landed on Monday evening.

It opens on piano, then lays the floor at 10 seconds

Press play and it starts quietly. Just as the album notes say, the piano comes first, and for the first 10 seconds there's almost no low end and almost no high end. After 10 seconds the low end grows three times thicker and the floor is laid.

Then, at 50 seconds, it steps up a level. It's about 5 dB louder than the first 10 seconds. dB (decibels) is the unit of loudness: a 1 dB change is barely noticeable, and a 10 dB change sounds roughly twice as loud. So 5 dB is the kind of jump that makes you go, "Oh, it got bigger," right away.

The loudest point is at 2:40. And for the last 15 seconds or so, it closes quietly, just the way it began.

Four minutes and four seconds, and the bass never drops out

This surprised me the most. I cut the song into 0.25-second slices, and there isn't a single spot where the low end goes missing for a second or longer. "Low end" here means below 150 Hz. Hz (hertz) is how many times the air vibrates per second, and below 150 Hz is where the bass and kick drum live, the rumble you feel in your body.

The loudness barely wobbles, either. Nine out of every ten 0.25-second slices fall inside a 9 dB window. This isn't a ballad that belts and then crashes down. It lays down a floor and carries you all the way to the end!

A long list of real players in the credits

Composed by Jung Chang Hyun, who also played the piano, co-arranged it with Kang Tae Gyu and directed the recording. Lyrics by three people: Kang Tae Gyu, Yoo Seungyu and Ahn Hayoung.

Strings arranged and conducted by Wi Jong-su, performed by Jam strings. Guitar by Won Sang-woo, bass by Min Kyung-hwan, drums by Lee Ji-sung, keyboard by Park Su-bin, chorus by Kim Hyun-a. The credits run long with the names of real players.

The album introduction quotes one line of the lyrics: "A woman should be cherished and loved." It's a thank-you to the one person who stayed close through busy, exhausting days. The single also includes two backing versions (MR and INST).

In the car, one notch louder

Just give it a listen, trust me. The moment it steps up at 50 seconds, and the peak at 2:40. Those are the only two spots you need to remember. The bass holds the song up to the very end, so it sounds even better on car speakers with a good low end.
